Washington, D.C. — January 29, 2026 — The ACES Mobility Coalition today announced that it has signed on to a joint letter supporting the bipartisan discussion draft of the SELF DRIVE Act, recently released by Representatives Bob Latta (R-OH) and Debbie Dingell (D-MI). The letter which was also signed by leading transportation, autonomous vehicle and accessibility associations, was sent to leadership of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and its Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade. It reflects broad national support for establishing a modern federal framework to advance the safe deployment of autonomous vehicle (AV) technology in the United States.
By joining many prestigious national organizations in signing the letter, the ACES Mobility Coalition reinforced its commitment to policies that improve roadway safety, expand mobility access, strengthen supply chains, and ensure continued U.S. leadership in autonomous vehicle innovation.
Autonomous vehicles including shared autonomous mobility operations, have already logged more than 145 million miles on U.S. public roads, operating passenger services in cities such as Orlando, Jacksonville, Lansing, Phoenix, Austin, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Despite this progress, the United States still lacks a comprehensive federal policy framework to provide consistent, nationwide rules for AV deployment.
The SELF DRIVE Act addresses this gap by authorizing critical AV safety rulemakings to modernize federal motor vehicle safety standards for vehicles designed to operate without a human driver, require AV manufacturers to develop safety cases to address various operational risks including cybersecurity threats, and provide consistent AV data to state and local officials. These provisions would help accelerate safe innovation while providing greater regulatory certainty for industry, regulators, and the public.
The legislation also plays a key role in maintaining U.S. global competitiveness. As China accelerates its investment in autonomous vehicle development, a strong federal framework is essential to ensure American companies remain leaders in this transformative technology. In addition, the SELF DRIVE Act lays the foundation for the growth of more inclusive mobility solutions, including vehicles designed to meet the needs of people with disabilities and emerging use cases that can re-imagine how Americans move.
The ACES Mobility Coalition looks forward to continued engagement with Congress throughout the legislative process to support the safe, timely, and accessible deployment of autonomous vehicles and to strengthen U.S. leadership in next-generation mobility.
